Easy Game Day Appetizer Ideas

The Big Game is coming up this Sunday! If you’re like me, you’re mostly in it for the funny commercials and the good food. I’ll be bringing Stromboli’s that I make using a tried-and-true pizza dough recipe we shared on the blog many years ago! Chances are I’ll whip up a couple pizzas too because my kids will enjoy them. The one thing you’ll want to note is that for best results, you’ll want to start the dough the night before. If you don’t have time for that, you’ll need to add more yeast than what the recipe calls for, but the dough won’t have the time to develop as much flavor.

Cheesy Stromboli Recipe

For Stromboli, just use your favorite pizza dough recipe or the recipe above (I used about 350 grams of dough per Stromboli – the recipe above makes 5 pizzas/Strombolis), a drizzle of olive oil, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, garlic powder and oregano powder. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface, then brush with olive oil. Sprinkle it with garlic powder and oregano, then layer on the cheese (about 5-6 slices of provolone and 1/2 cup mozzarella for a 350-gram loaf). Roll it up, and place it seam-side down on oiled parchment paper. Brush with more olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder.

Stromboli typically has deli meats like Genoa salami or pepperoni in it, but we made a cheese-only version due to some food sensitivities.

For some other simple recipes to make for your Big Game party, I recommend the following dips & desserts!

Fresh Salsa

This recipe is so simple and comes together in minutes in a food processor! It calls for just 6 ingredients and is really tasty. All you need is plum tomatoes, bell peppers, red onions, lime, cilantro and salt. This version is really kid-friendly because it’s not spicy, but if you want to add some spices you can add jalapeno or crushed red pepper flakes.

Guacamole

For another great dip recipe to eat with chips, this classic guacamole recipe is always a hit. Lately I’ve been omitting the red onions because my kids are just not fans. However I have finally gotten them to like it with cilantro! For this recipe, you’ll need some ripe (but not too ripe) avocados, cilantro, lime, garlic and red onion. I usually mash it with a whisk for best results!

Pecan Topped Salted Caramel Apple Dip

Don’t forget the sweets! One year at the Big Game party, everyone forgot to bring sweets. Oops! Now I try to remember to bring along something sweet to share. This recipe for Pecan Topped Salted Caramel Apple Dip is the perfect thing to bring, along with some tasty homegrown apples. This week (February 9th-15th, 2024), Pink Lady® apples are on sale for just $1.69/lb. or $8.99 1/2 peck.

Bite Size Cheesecakes

For a simple, finger-food dessert, try this recipe for Mini Cheesecakes with Fresh Berries! All you need is some cookies like vanilla wafers or Oreos, cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla and some berries to serve on top! These are perfect because you don’t need to remember to bring paper plates or serving utensils since they are single servings!
