Farm Fresh Apples: No Waxy Finish!

The crisp, cool mornings and sunny afternoons of fall heighten to the cravings for biting into a crunchy, sweet-tart apple. For me, any old apple won’t do! It has to be a freshly harvested locally grown apple! The flavor of farm fresh apples is far superior to produce that is grown to withstand longer shipping and storage times. Plus, grocery stores are limited to only a handful of apple varieties, whereas we grow over 30 varieties of apples and regularly have more than a dozen varieties to choose from in our farm market!

More good news is that our apples (whether you purchase them in our store or straight off our trees) are not coated with food grade wax such as Apeel™. Although food-grade wax is likely to be safe, it’s not exactly food and our apples don’t need it.

The reason a food-grade wax would be applied is to extend the shelf life of the apples so that they can withstand longer shipping distances and stay on the shelves of grocery stores longer. Here, our apples are harvested, sorted, washed and stored in cold storage with high humidity to keep them crisp and preserve their freshness for many months. Most of our apples are sold in our retail market or to wholesale accounts within 1-2 hours away. This helps reduce food miles, carbon emissions and food waste — all great things for our health and the environment!

We currently have 15 apple varieties and have just opened our owner’s favorite variety: Evercrisp!

This apple is sweet, super crisp and delicious. It’s a cross between Fuji and Honeycrisp and it is quickly growing as one of the most desired apple varieties. Whether you’re a fan of sweet eating apples or tart baking apples, there’s something for everyone at our orchard! Both pick-your-own and our farm market are open Monday through Saturday! Come by on Saturdays and select Friday nights to enjoy our Fall Festivals!
