Fun Facts On Blueberries

If all the blueberries grown in North America in one year were spread out in a single layer, they would cover a four-lane highway that stretched from New York to Chicago.

New Jersey and Michigan are the top two blueberry producing states. Michigan grows the most berries, and 2/3 of them are used for processing. Most of the cultivated fresh blueberries come from New Jersey.

Blueberries have more antioxidants than most other fruits and vegetables. An antiooxidant neutralizes harmful free radicals in your body that cause cell damage.

The blueberry is a native crop of the United States. It is also the second most popular fruit in the United States, falling just behind strawberries.

One Berry, Two Berry, Pick me a Sweet Blueberry!

It is important to remember that blueberries grow in clusters and not all the berries ripen at the same time. One cluster may have ripe fruit, unripe fruit, and green fruit. So take your time when picking!

Blueberries begin to turn color before they are fully ripe. A berry may look ripe, but when you turn it over and the stem end is still red or green, it is far from ripe. A fully ripe blueberry is a deep blue color, even near the stem.

An unripe berry will not ripen further after harvest. It will be high in acids, low in sugar, and have little flavor. So avoid the unripe ones to get those sweet berries that you are looking for!
